Thanks Stumpy!

Stumptown was as fun as usual, but this year I was super-geeked they let me ride my scooter into the event BOTH days. On the first day of the comicfest I dazzled the attendees waiting to get in, as I scooted past them...and through the Doubletree doors, wearing my "Kickstart Karen" superhero essemble. It was hilarious to see the looks I got. Second day, I left the cape and boots at home and came as the mild mannered publisher of Bumpstart.
One of the many highlights of Stumptown was meeting the creators of other scooter-related publications. It was nice seeing other scooter enthusiasts in attendance.

Otis Singletary and Nate Murphy, creators of The Two Percent Solution and fellow scooterists, stopped by the Bumpstart table to say Hi. See you at Monkey Run; there better be Monkey bingo this year!

On Sunday, I took a break from my table and did a quick walk around. I wish I had more time to look around. It was a weekend of sensory overload at the Doubletree. Towards the end of the day, I had the pleasure of meeting Gail Simone, writer of Wonder Woman. I gave her a copy of American Scooterist's "Beat Issue", which she just loved. I recently became the new publisher of the Vespa Club of America's magazine and I have to say that this double-issue is going to be a tough act to follow.

Too Much Coffee Man

This looks like a job for Too Much Coffee Man!

TMCM is a satirical comic strip created by Shannon Wheeler. It's a parody of superheroes and TMCM even wears full body underwear with a buttoned flap on the back. Shannon and composer Daniel Steven Crafts adapted the comic strip into an opera that debuted at Brunish Hall here in Portland last year.

Ice Ice Scooter

Finding inspiration from his Whiteout series, Steve Leiber drew this ice Vespa for me. He is a founding member of Mercury Studio and has been published by Dark Horse, DC, Marvel, and Oni to name a few.

Brybox

Bryan Fleming aka "Brybox" sketched this great scooter action drawing for me during Stumptown. Like "Big Time" he is also attending Pacific Northwest College of Art and a member of the Robopocalypse comic collective.

Big Time

Know as BT Livermore or simply "Big Time", this handlebar mustacheoed man digs robots and drawing. His two-wheeled transportation is Crusher, his bicycle. When he's not busy attending Pacific Northwest College of Art, he's collaborating on a children's book project with 59 other comic artists. The proceeds go to Make-A-Wish Foundation. Kaz's Mour Ning Star

On his website, Kazimir Strzepek describes Mour Ning Star, "Eisner nominated and Ignatz award losing post-apocalyptic adventure comic...." Well, I liked it Kaz and thought you should of won.

Sarah Oleksyk's Scooter

Sarah's table was packed during most of Stumptown comicfest, but she did manage to fit in a quick scooter sketch for me. She also told me her boyfriend had a scooter, but it was stolen and hasn't gotten another one. :-(

Kickstart goes to Stumptown Comics fest!

I'd never been to a comic fest before, so I didn't know what to expect. Would there be masked avengers or caped cusaders walking the halls of the Doubletree? No such luck. The most memorable sight, by far, was a man walking around with a boom box, wearing a spinner mask. His tire rim mask actually spun around as he walked by.

There were so many great artists in attendance and I was inspired by each and every one of them. Too bad I can't draw. While I was there, some of the inkers were kind enough to do some quick scooter sketches for me. As soon as I get around to scanning them, I'll be sure to post a few each entry.
